Presented by Heather Jarvis and Joe Messinger
If you’re serving Gen X or Gen Y clients, college planning is key. The sticker price for a college education is now between $100,000-$320,000 per student – if you graduate in four years.
So, what are we as financial planners doing to help our clients? Gen X and Gen Y families need help reducing the cost of college and navigating loan repayment, both for their kids and for themselves. Most advisors aren’t prepared to answer their questions and serve them effectively. Are you?
Your ideal clients need you to be informed about financial aid and student loans. They’re looking for answers. We have them. Join the profession’s leading experts on college funding and student loans to learn how you can attract and serve ideal clients by addressing their biggest financial concerns!
This full-day workshop aims to give you the knowledge and tools you need to help clients navigate the college funding investment. Via a full day of in-person training and discussion, Joe and Heather will give you the technical college-planning and loan-repayment skills, as well as practice-management resources and hacks you need, to serve Gen X and Y.
Heather Jarvis graduated from Duke University School of Law cum laude owing $125,000 in student loans and facing 30-years’ worth of $1,200 monthly payments. No one ever told Heather that she couldn’t afford to go to Duke, even though, um, she couldn’t. Her mother was a modestly paid executive assistant and her father a mostly unemployed Shakespearean actor.
Heather didn’t realize she couldn’t afford an expensive education until after she got one.
Duke Law’s generous loan repayment assistance program made it possible for Heather to eschew the money without defaulting on her student loans (Go Devils!). She will always be grateful that Duke enabled her to continue ignoring her own financial security in pursuit of her irresistible urge to stand up for people in trouble.
Widely recognized by school professionals and media representatives as an expert source of information, Heather has trained thousands of students and professionals and is sought after for her sophisticated legal knowledge and accessible teaching style.
Joe Messinger, CFP®, ChFC®, CLU®, is partner and director of college planning at Capstone Wealth Partners, founder of Capstone College Partners, and co-founder of College Aid Pro ™.
Joe is passionate about Captone’s College Pre-Approval™ process. Through his speaking and educational workshops, he guides fellow advisors through a process that allows families to reach better financial outcomes, and eliminate the stress & anxiety they have around paying for college.
This process addresses an acute need of Gen-X families trying to make a $100,000 to $250,000 investment in college for each student. Financial advisors are blown away when they understand the message, and learn how the College Pre-Approval™ system can work for their practice!
As a financial advisor himself, Joe is dedicated to spreading the message of College Pre-Approval™ through speaking engagements, webinars, and presentations.

At XY Planning Network, we built our business using the Entrepreneurial Operating System (EOS). The EOS system gave us a toolkit, quarterly cadence, and common language to run our business.

Arlene Moss, XYPN’s Executive Business Coach, will join Jerry to share her insight from working with and coaching XYPN members who have implemented EOS.

You’ll leave with an understanding of how EOS tools can be directly applied to your firm for immediate benefit and impact, and will learn to look at your business in a whole new way. Presented by Kathleen Boyd XY Planning Network
For advisors targeting a younger and more diverse type of clientele, an AUM (Assets Under Management) fee model is unlikely to be a feasible fee structure, especially if those clients have minimal assets to begin with. While AUM has been a conducive fee model for servicing Baby Boomers with substantial assets, establishing a fee-for-service model has become a proven alternative to help firms cast a wider net of prospects who are looking for professional advice and guidance. In this session, attendees will learn about the various fee-for-service options, how to select the right fee model(s) for your clientele, and strategies to profitably price your financial planning services.
Kathleen Boyd is XYPN’s resident Financial Planning & Process Coach. She holds the CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ designation and possesses almost 10 years of experience working for a variety of financial services firms. Kathleen is an Investment News ‘40 Under 40’ recipient, and FA Magazine named her a ‘Top 10 Advisor to Watch.’ Outside of XYPN, Kathleen has written financial planning pieces for Michael Kitces’ Nerds Eye View blog, and currently works as an adjunct professor teaching CFP® coursework at Oklahoma State University

Presented by Jan Schalkwijk, CFA JPS Global Investments
The ESG/SRI/Impact space has grown by leaps and bounds, but absolutely has room for you. The US Social Investment Forum references in its 2020 Report on US Sustainable, Responsible, and Impact Investing Trends that SRI assets total $17 trillion, or 33% of US-managed assets. But how much of that money is in strategies that do some light version of ESG screening, have a single exclusion, or merely state that they consider ESG factors? Mainstreaming of SRI goes hand in hand with the reporting of somewhat inflated numbers, even if for the simple fact that it will include a lot of “me too” funds from traditional investment firms that see the marketing opportunity. That is not to minimize the growth of SRI—it is real. However, as advisors we should be encouraged to know that if we offer SRI in a thoughtful and client-centric manner, the field is not as crowded as one might presume. It requires finding ones authentic voice, looking under the hood of the investment strategies rather than just "checking the SRI box," and being willing to navigate the complexities of investing with our clients' values and preferences in mind. The goal of this session is to provide a primer on the field and equip you to embark on your journey of offering this investment approach to your clients in a way that best fits your practice and your clients.
Jan is the founder & Chief Investment Officer of JPS Global Investments, focused on Socially Responsible, ESG, and Impact Investing.
Jan previously served as portfolio manager and partner of Africa Capital Group, where he was the director of impact investing. Prior to JPS and ACG, Jan was vice president of investment platforms at Franklin Templeton.
Jan received an Economics degree from Maastricht University, Bachelor of Science from Menlo College, MBA from Santa Clara University and is a CFA charterholder.
In his spare time, Jan enjoys snowboarding, mountain biking, traveling, and reading. He also taught Impact Investing at the University of Oregon and is inspired by the many students he has encountered that are pursuing a career path with values alignment.

Presented by Inga Timmerman Attainable Wealth
This session will focus on designing and running a practice that fits your lifestyle with the minimal amount of time, specifically focusing on the first five years of business. If you're looking to build a lifestyle practice, make between 100-250k per year, and work 20-30 hours a week max, this session is for you. We'll discuss: 1. The first two years of "survival" and paying bills. 2. The next three years of spending your money where it matters. 3. How to look at your costs and cut everything you do not need in the business while paying for what you need in life (as part of the business). 4. How to schedule your life, practice, and meetings to be able to fit everything practice-related in around 20 hours per week. 5. How my experience hiring someone made me realize I do not necessarily need (or want) outside help. 6. The bottom line: building a relatively successful business with little time and effort and being able to maintain and refine it on an ongoing basis.
Inga is the founder and owner of Attainable Wealth, a lifestyle practice, in which she works with about 30 client-friends. Additionally, she is an associate professor and CFP Program director at California State University Northridge. She lives in Jacksonville, FL with her husband, two little kids and an old cat. Her goal is to work no more than 20 hours per week between her two jobs and to get the business revenue to $200k without increasing her work hours (currently, we are at 30 hours total and 150k).

Presented by Shannon O'Toole Shannon O'Toole Coaching
We’ve all heard “feedback is a gift,” but then why is it so hard to hear and accept it sometimes? And why is it difficult to share it with others, too? In this 60-minute presentation, Shannon speaks to the brain science behind how our brains anticipate and interrupt feedback and how we can position it to ourselves and others to be received as a gift. This session discusses the pitfalls to avoid and how to ensure feedback has the most impact and establishes a culture of trust. The pesentation of feedback can also be tailored to an advisor audience regarding receiving feedback from their clients.
As a seasoned executive leader in the wealth management industry, Shannon O'Toole thrives on driving growth for firms through well-designed staffing and succession strategies, as well as programs that nurture the proactive development of their talent.
A graduate from the University of Missouri with a Bachelor of Science degree in Consumer and Family Economics. Shannon's career started in the world of head-hunting during the fast-paced dotcom technology boom. After years focused on recruiting top talent, in 2004 she brought her talents to the financial services industry, where she eventually rose to become the Chief Talent Officer of Buckingham Wealth Partners. There, she oversaw the growth of the firm from 75 to 500 people and scaled the organization from 1 to 40 offices nationwide. During Shannon's tenure, she created engaging career paths, redesigned the performance management process to focus on strengths and continuous feedback, and implemented formal training programs that fueled the development of employees. She also provided HR coaching for 150 small, independent firms. Through that particular experience, she discovered within the wealth management world, there is a void in talent consulting. In 2020, she launched Shannon O'Toole Coaching, her HR consulting firm dedicated to helping firms "Engage their Talent and Activate their Vision."

And since there was no XYPN when I began, I had to create resources that I could use to manage my time and organize all the information being thrown at me. Some challenges you may be facing are: How should I structure my files online so I can find stuff later? I’m drowning in information. How do I organize it all? I just got my first client! What do I do now? In this working session, you’ll have time to brainstorm with your colleagues and walk away with tangible ideas to establish structure and make sense of the chaos for your new business. I’ll share tools, tips, and ideas that helped me get started—and still use today.
Known as Your Financial Mom, Pam Horack, CFP® has been a fixture at XYPN since it’s inception. Along with being a Founding Member, she has attended all of the conferences (even online!) and has been a speaker for most of them. While she was a corporate trainer in her former life, she has also presented for schools, churches, women’s groups and college programs. Her passion is sharing the concept of Your Financial Tower, and she often helps other advisors in addition to serving her clients at Pathfinder Planning LLC over the past ten years.

Presented by Mario Nardone XY Investment Solutions
This session is intended to help advisors think beyond core asset classes like publicly-traded stocks and bonds. Yes, those are the core building blocks of long-term portfolios, but advisors shouldn't avoid thinking outside the box simply out of fear of the unknown. The alternative investment landscape is vast, but with a thoughtful approach and effective screening resources, having a few options in your back pocket might just help you build better, more thoughtful, and diversified portfolios for your clients. For advisors interested in landing higher net worth clients, you know competition is fierce, and the well-heeled "advice" firms have the edge when it comes to marketing and wining-and-dining. Why not make your edge be the one-two punch of comprehensive planning and a more sophisticated approach to investing?
Mario is Chief Investment Strategist of XYIS via a consulting engagement with the firm he founded, East Bay Investment Solutions. He began his investment career in 1999 with Vanguard mutual funds, where he spent 10 years, consulting institutions and advisors on investment policy and portfolio construction, specializing in ETFs. He earned the Chartered Financial Analyst designation in 2003.
Mario is Past President of CFA Society South Carolina and Former Chairman of the College of Charleston Finance Department Advisory Board. His approach to investments and the industry has been featured in Investment News, NAPFA Advisor Magazine, South Carolina Public Radio, and other publications and media outlets.

In this session, you’ll learn essential skills and techniques to address burnout before it’s too late. Kori Lennon, XYPN’s Director of Advisor Education, will outline core causes and symptoms of advisor burnout, provide strategies for addressing burnout with effective boundaries, and give you concrete tools to establish boundaries in your business.

Presented by Scott Frank Stone Steps Financial
IQ will not help your clients on its own. Just knowing that eating less and exercising more will help you lose weight won't work if you don't execute, and the same can be said in personal finance. I used to think that clients who didn't follow through on their plans were bad clients. In time, I realized that I was being a bad advisor. In reality, personal finance is 90% personal and 10% finance, but I was acting as though planning was 100% finance. By learning how to combine emotional intelligence (EQ) with IQ, I learned how to help clients prioritize what is essential to them, align their money with life, and execute on their goals with energy and inspiration. IQ + EQ = Real Financial Planning.
Scott Frank is the founder of Stone Steps Financial, a financial planning and investment management firm located in Encinitas, CA that helps families and professionals align their money with life.
He is passionate about pursuing a life-long learning model in order to best serve his clients and holds the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA), Certified Financial Planner‚ (CFP), and Registered Life Planner (RLP) designations.
When he's not helping clients pursue their financial goals, you'll find Scott co-hosting, Real Personal Finance, where he and another financial advisor break down listener‚ personal finance questions into easily digestible answers, training advisors the EVOKE process at the Kinder Institute of Life Planning, surfing, or hanging out in Cardiff, where he lives with his wife and two boys.

Presented by Britton Gregory Seaborn Financial, LLC
Moving from a solo practitioner to having employees (especially virtual ones!) is a challenge; personnel management is a separate field of study from financial planning, and despite its reputation as a "soft skill," there are distinct best practices, tools, and strategies that can make management much less painful. In his time as an engineering manager, Britton learned to incorporate some of these strategies from various sources to help his team run effectively—despite it spanning the globe—and these have carried over well into the financial planning profession. From operational rhythms, to feedback, to stand-ups, to one-on-ones, these tools can help you effectively manage a team—even when you can't be in the same physical building with them!
Britton is an engineer-turned-financial-planner in Austin, Texas. As such, he shies away from suits and commissions, and instead tends towards blue jeans, data-driven analysis, and a fee-only approach to financial planning.

Presented by Brooklyn Brock Ellevate Advisors LLC and Chris Stanley Beach Street Legal LLC
Congratulations on building a successful advisory business! That’s definitely an accomplishment. Now, it may be time to move on and enjoy the next chapter of life. But how does one exit a highly-regulated, relationship-driven business? Complexities abound—from negotiating the sale price and deal terms, to managing client expectations and paperwork. Chris Stanley and Brooklyn Brock help advisors navigate these issues, among all shapes and sizes of succession plans. This session will provide the foundational knowledge and resources you need to start constructing an ideal exit strategy. Whether you dream of starting another business or spending more time with the grandkids, designing your succession plan is the first step to secure the future of your family and your advisory firm.
Brooklyn started as the 3rd generation in her family's advisory firm. She supported several hundred client relationships, serviced a few dozen retirement plans, and assisted with 2 business transitions with a client retention rate of over 95%. Brooklyn founded Ellevate Advisors LLC because financial advisors rarely do financial planning for themselves like they do for their clients, so they're often unhappy in life and ultimately plan to die at their desks. Brooklyn is passionate about providing Financial Planning and Exit Planning for financial advisors (themselves) exclusively!
Chris Stanley is the Founding Principal of Beach Street Legal LLC, a law practice and compliance consultancy for investment advisers and financial planners. In this role he provides legal advice and compliance counseling related to federal and state securities laws, SEC rules and regulations, RIA mergers & acquisitions, investment management compliance, RIA registration, and general corporate legal matters. Most recently he served as General Counsel for Loring Ward (now integrated into Buckingham Strategic Partners), a turnkey asset management provider headquartered in San Jose, California. He also previously served as Loring Ward's Chief Compliance Officer, as well as Chief Legal Officer and Chief Compliance Officer for the SA Funds Investment Trust, a mutual fund family advised by Loring Ward. Chris received his J.D. and M.B.A. from Santa Clara University, and his B.A. from Boston College. He has also passed the FINRA Series 7 General Securities Representative and Series 24 General Securities Principal examinations, as well as the NASAA Series 66 examination. The number one request we receive from XYPN members? More time. Running a firm is no small task, and client services can take an extraordinary amount of time. For many advisors, a Client Meeting Surge structure, with client review meetings held during specific periods of the year on a tight schedule, has allowed them systematize client services, streamline process, and free up time for personal priorities, business development, and professional growth.
In her 20+ year career, Stephanie has authored The Power of Practice Management (Bloomberg Press), written columns for Investment News and Financial Planning magazine as well as articles for Kitces.com, FA Magazine and Advisor Perspectives, has been named an Industry Influential, spoken at nearly every major conference and remains a highly sought-after speaker, business strategist and executive coach. She currently writes a monthly column for Investment News. She is also the founder of Limitless Advisor Coaching, now in its fourth successful year. What kind of biz do you want to run: expect to vision board your ideal firm by hearing from the folks who have built them. From solo and lifestyle to enterprise, you’ll get an inside peek at what’s possible.
Stephanie is a Certified Public Accountant and Chartered Financial Analyst®. She audited hedge funds in New York City with PricewaterhouseCoopers during the 2008 financial crisis. Following this challenging work, Stephanie joined Man Group, the world’s largest publicly traded hedge fund as a risk manager for six years, handling $15 billion in hedge funds. After years of serving banks, pensions and endowments, Stephanie became interested in bringing institutional quality services to a broader population. In 2016, she left New York City to pursue a career in individual money management where she managed $200 million in assets across equities, bonds, and alternative investments. Stephanie recognized that investment management was only a small piece of the service that individuals truly need in a financial advisor. Presented by Melissa Ellis Sapphire Wealth Planning LLC
This session is appropriate at any business phase, but is probably most effective when preparing to launch or building the firm. Having a niche in divorce planning and working with many business owners as they go through the divorce process, I have heard stories from both sides of the marriage. In addition to that, I experienced my own divorce as I was building my firm. My goal is to offer a humorous yet heartfelt list of what not to do, based on personal experience and stories told to me by business owners going through divorce.
It is widely recognized that a divorce is one of life's most stressful events. The emotional and financial toll can be devastating. Melissa guides her clients through the divorce process helping to avoid many of the financial pitfalls. As a Certified Divorce Financial Analyst and having personally experienced the pain of divorce, Melissa Ellis is in a unique position to understand and also help married couples avoid the path to divorce through financial planning. Additionally, she is a Certified Financial Planner and holds a Masters degree in Personal Financial Planning from the University of MO-Columbia. When Melissa is not busy helping clients, she enjoys traveling and has visited all 50 states, Europe, Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean. Her next travel goal is to explore all 7 continents! In 2020, she became the Executive Producer of a short film, 'The Unnecessary Salvation of Mary McDaniel' that has recently won awards on the film festival circuit. Oh, and don't forget to ask about her grandchildren, her culinary talents and the Kansas City Chiefs and Royals. She's passionate about all those, but admits her grandkids top the list!
